Crowns Q & A

When a cracked, chipped, or damaged tooth changes the look of your smile and diminishes your confidence, a custom dental crown could be the perfect solution. Expert dentist Steven A. Burman, DMD, of Burman Dental, L.L.C. in Jupiter, Florida, provides beautiful crowns to restore your smile, including same-day CEREC® crowns for your convenience. A dental crown can protect a weakened and frail tooth and boost your oral health. Book your consultation by calling Burman Dental, L.L.C. today.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown acts like a cover or cap that protects your tooth. Dr. Burman sculpts crowns to the shape of your original tooth and securely places the dental crown on top of your weakened or damaged tooth.

A properly fitting dental crown should completely cover the visible portion of your tooth above your gum line. Dr. Burman uses a special dental cement to carefully seal your crown in place.

Why would I need a dental crown?

Dr. Burman might suggest a dental crown for a number of reasons, for example, to cover a cracked or discolored tooth.

A crown can hold together, strengthen, and protect a weak tooth and enhance the appearance of your tooth. Dr. Burman might also suggest a crown after a root canal or to cover an oddly-shaped tooth or as dental implant restoration.

Are there different kinds of crowns?

You can have crowns in several different dental materials, such as:

  • Porcelain
  • Gold or another alloy (zirconia)
  • Stainless steel
  • Resin
  • Porcelain fused to metal

Burman Dental, L.L.C. offers different types of crowns, including CEREC same-day crowns. CEREC technology involves the convenient in-office scanning, designing, and milling of beautiful all-porcelain crowns in a single office visit. No messy impression, no temporary restoration, no second visit.

Porcelain is an excellent option for metal-free, biocompatible restorations for optimal oral and systemic health. Porcelain is an ideal material for dental restorations due to its strength, durability, and ability to be beautifully matched to the color of your natural teeth.

How do CEREC same-day crowns work?

Dr. Burman prepares your tooth, removes the damaged parts, and shapes your tooth, so your tooth is ready to properly fit your restoration.

After preparing your tooth, Dr. Burman or his assistant uses the CEREC camera to take highly accurate mapping images of your tooth before converting the images into a 3D computerized model. Dr. Burman uses this 3D model to design your custom restoration.

When Dr. Burman is happy with the design, he sends the data to the in-office milling machine that fabricates your new crown from an all-porcelain block.

The milling process typically takes about an hour to complete. Then, Dr. Burman selects the correct shade of porcelain to match your teeth, before glazing or polishing your crown in a special furnace and cementing it to your tooth.

With CEREC, everything is digital, and there are no messy impressions. Your crown is created in-office while you wait, and there’s no need for a second or third visit or a temporary crown. CEREC gives you convenience and comfort.
